On March 17, 2020, Queen’s Park declared a state of emergency under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act to protect the health and safety of individuals and families in Ontario. Among the measures was the cancellation of elective procedures — surgeries scheduled sometimes months in advance — to create capacity for hospitals in case they experienced a massive surge in COVID-19 patients.

The following opinion piece by Mary Wells, dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Waterloo, and Suzanne Kresta, dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan ran on December 6, 2020 in CBC's Opinion section. It's reposted with permission. 
 

Mary Wells considered herself an engineer rather than a woman in engineering when she graduated from McGill University in 1987.

It wasn’t until the December 6, 1989 killing of 14 women at École Polytechnique de Montréal that she realized the significance of her gender in the profession for the first time.

Pearl Sullivan, the University of Waterloo’s former dean of engineering and the first woman to hold the position, died on November 28 after a 12-year battle with cancer.

Just the fifth woman across Canada to head a school of engineering, she was a dynamic force for Waterloo Engineering and the entire University.

As he approached his first co-op term in January 2020, Ethan Leiher knew what he wanted in a job. A student in Waterloo’s School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability, he hoped to gain hands-on experience with an organization dedicated to protecting nature. Ethan tackled his job search with determination and thought he’d found the perfect position — until a lack of funding threatened his plans.

Every month, some 23,000 Android devices are stolen or lost, with more than two-thirds never being recovered.

Even with Google’s Find my Device or Apple’s Find my iPhone, users are subjected to gaps in retrieval solutions, whether it’s from a dead battery or a thief has put the device on airplane mode.

But not anymore.

Anthony Miller has put in many long days in the seven months since COVID-19 first hit Canada. He’s the experiential learning coordinator for Waterloo Pharmacy’s co-operative education program and along with the experiential team, particularly Sarah de Waal and Professor Nancy Waite, he’s overcome many hurdles to ensure Pharmacy students continue to experience safe co-op work terms.

COVID-19 has impacted 2020 co-op work terms in the winter, spring and Fall Terms, with some jobs being cancelled and others created on very short notice.

A Waterloo political science student has been named one of ten Youth Champions for Disarmament by the United Nations. Kirsten Mosey was inspired to work in global affairs after volunteering at a notorious refugee camp on the small Greek island of Lesvos.
