With a contribution of $1.04 million to the University of Waterloo, Scotiabank is providing support for talented researchers and students, including scholarships for students who are underrepresented in STEM fields. The investment is part of ScotiaRISE, the bank’s 10-year, $500 million initiative to promote economic resilience among disadvantaged groups.
January is often thought of as a month of new perspectives, fresh starts
Velocity companies at the University of Waterloo have now raised a cumulative total of $3.6 billion in funding. The total funding raised by founders just five months ago was $2.4 billion.
Growth-stage alumni companies from the University’s flagship incubator, such as ApplyBoard, Faire and Embark Trucks, led the charge while, back at Velocity,current early-stage companies raised more than $30 million collectively in 2021 — a glimpse at the momentum of Velocity’s next generation of alumni. It had taken two years for companies to go from $1 to $2 billion.
The University of Waterloo has been designated Research University of the Year in the Canadian universities comprehensive tier by Research Infosource Inc. for the 14th consecutive year.
Waterloo also ranked 13th in Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities for sponsored research income with more than $211 million. Among comprehensive universities, Waterloo placed first for corporate research income with more than $31 million.
