Waterloo Region MED TECH: Bridging the Gap 2016 is the inaugural conference presented by the Centre for Biotechnology and Bioengineeringat the University of Waterloo, Grand River HospitalCommunitech and the Waterloo Wellington Local Health Integration Network (WWLHIN). It commemorates 100 years of health care at Grand River Hospital’s Freeport Campus, which is increasingly specializing in rehabilitative care, health innovation and research.

The one-day conference will feature presentations, discussions and three keynote addresses. Mark Wilson, senior vice-president, marketing at BlackBerry, will present a keynote on secure communication and collaboration in health care. William Charnetski, chief innovation strategist at Ontario’s Ministry of Health and Long-term Care, will present on the province’s innovation strategy. Dr. Sonny Kohli, a physician in internal medicine and critical care, is project lead for Cloud DX, a Kitchener company that is among the finalists for the Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE, worth $10 million. It is a competition to develop a real-world version of a Tricorder from Star Trek, a hand-held medical device that monitors and diagnoses several health conditions.
