Cultural videos spark conversations

by Claire Mastrangelo, Office of Advancement

Chérisse Mike (BA ’17) set out to address cultural misconceptions at Waterloo. Now, her message is rippling out across North America.

“Since I moved here from Trinidad, I’ve found that the entire Caribbean, or all black people, are often grouped together,” she says. “That can be harmful to people who are proud of their identity.”

Waterloo alumni on a mission to expand the entrepreneurial mindset

by Claire Mastrangelo, Office of Advancement

Almost every entrepreneurial story includes a chapter on struggle, with business founders facing self-doubt, financial hardship and personal sacrifice. Waterloo alumni Nirbhay Singh (BASc ’17), who goes by the nickname Harry Sahi, and his business partner Zaham Mustaq (BMath ’17) are passionate about rewriting that chapter to make it a little more serene.

I’m Laurin, and I am entering my second year working towards my Masters of Science in Physiotherapy (PT) at the University of Toronto as a Co-President of the PT Student Association. Ready when the bell rings

by Claire Mastrangelo, Office of Advancement

Dick Callahan (BA ’62) started university thinking he’d become a priest, or maybe a teacher. It turned out, he had a different calling.

While studying Latin at St. Jerome’s University, Dick played on the Warriors men’s basketball team. His athletic career ended abruptly when he injured both of his ankles in his junior year. Still, his love of sports kept him close to his team. He attended every game, at home and away.

Nature inspires new ways of seeing

by Melanie MacVoy (BA ’95), Alumnus

I graduated in 1995 with a Bachelor's in Fine Arts Studio from the University of Waterloo. Tony Urquhart was one of my most influential and memorable professors. (And our class trip to Chicago! That was sooo much fun!) I instinctively refer to my foundational painting and drawing skills learned at Waterloo to this day, and they allow me to continue to grow as an artist.
