Theatre of the Beat was founded by University of Waterloo grads Johnny Wideman (BA ’09), Rebecca Steiner (BA ’12), Kimberlee Walker (BA ’12), and Leah Harder (BA ’09) in 2011. They got their start on campus, creating a biographical play about Conrad Grebel archivist Sam Steiner (BA ’73). The show was entitled Gadfly: Sam Steiner Dodges the Draft and followed the transformation of a self-proclaimed bigot to social justice activist during the Vietnam war. The company has been ‘staging change’ ever since.

What do you want to be when you grow up? From a young age, we are asked to think about our career. Do you want to be a doctor? A lawyer? A teacher? Even as a kid, when you’re asked about your career, the answer is always some sort of job title. As we start to get older, this becomes an even tougher question.

My story is widely known in Athletics but perhaps not so well known among the greater university community.

It started innocently enough.  In the winter term of 2010, a hockey player in my class invited me to a game.  Though I have been a life-long hockey fan, I had never been to a Warrior game.  I do not know why, really.  Perhaps I did not expect the caliber of the game to be very high.  To be polite, more than any other reason, I went to that game, and I was flabbergasted!  The skills and speed demonstrated by the players were incredible.

It is coming up on 31 years since Jennifer (BASc '91) and I met at the University of Waterloo. I was in second year Systems Design Engineering and Jennifer was one of two women starting in her Mechanical Engineering class. I’m so happy that we met. During that term I was actually wondering if I could handle all the demands of 2^nd year engineering. Little did I know how important Waterloo would be to us.

“Is a degree from the University of Waterloo worth paying $100,000 in tuition fees and living expenses?” This is a question I’ve heard many students bring up, including myself. Having studied at Waterloo for over three years now, I’ve realized why this $100,000 investment is absolutely worth it.

A question that I have gotten a lot since my fashion debut on the national reality TV series, Project Runway, is how I made the jump from a tech career on Wall Street, to working in the fashion design industry? Well, why don't you see for yourself in the video here?

The power of artificial intelligence is already permeating throughout our work and social lives.

But as artificial intelligence (AI) systems “learn” from millions of interactions or case examples, it also has the potential to be disruptive, said experts from the University of Waterloo during a panel discussion on ‘Keeping the Human in AI’ at the Kitchener Public Library last week.

The professors with expertise in economics, philosophy, and human-computer interaction discussed the implications and how to mitigate against the dangers at the talk and during interviews.
