From the design of the Waterloo Pump, which brought clean water to communities in developing countries, to the invention of the BlackBerry, which opened the floodgates for the ubiquitous smartphone, Waterloo Engineering students, graduates and researchers have made an indelible mark on the world.

And in a technological age that includes artificial intelligence, ever-faster wireless communications and soon-to-be-self-driving vehicles, that process of innovation and contribution is only accelerating.

Canada and the United States have announced an agreement in principle on a new US-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement (USMCA). The University of Waterloo has experts available to speak with the media today on the proposed agreement and what it could mean for Canada.

On Friday, September 28, Waterloo celebrated the launch of the Cybersecurity and Privacy Institute (CPI) with 100 attendees including security leaders from the private and public sectors. CPI was formed to uncover new approaches to security and privacy and educating Canada’s future leaders to be able to understand and respond to emerging online threats.

The interdisciplinary Institute has the mandate to uncover new approaches to security and privacy and educating Canada’s future leaders to be able to understand and respond to emerging online threats. 

The Institute will also work closely with corporations and government to advance their cybersecurity and privacy protection capabilities.

Elevate Techfest is Canada’s largest technology and innovation festival that attracts global professionals, tech leaders, investors, and creatives who are at the forefront of innovation. Elevate is taking place in Toronto this week and several University of Waterloo faculty and alumni are featured in this year’s event line-up.

When the University of Waterloo discovered a gender pay gap among its faculty — it closed the gap and then established mandatory training for hiring committees to help prevent gender discrimination in the future, Waterloo’s president told global leaders at a UN Women’s summit in New York City.

The University of Waterloo has awarded six first-year students with HeForShe IMPACT scholarships in the fields of science, technology, engineering or mathematics. The scholarships are part of the University of Waterloo’s commitment to encourage more young minds to pursue careers in STEM, an area where those who identify as women or non-binary groups are currently underrepresented.
