Over the past few days, we have heard from many in the campus community on how our nation is doing in terms of building positive and supportive relationships with Indigenous people.

It is important to acknowledge these voices as well as the perspectives contained in an open letter to Canadian university presidents from Indigenous faculty members and others across the country. The letter calls on all post-secondary institutions to review their current approaches to working with Indigenous people and communities.

Inspiring, courageous, and quite possible one of the strongest and most passionate Warriors ever to have donned the black and gold, Heather Moyse is making her return to the Winter Olympics, her fourth games.

September 11, 2017, Heather Moyse announced on her Facebook page that she is making a return to the sport of bobsleigh and pushing towards a third Olympic gold medal. That's correct, Moyse has won TWO gold medals on the biggest stage, one in Sochi in 2014 and her first in 2010 on home soil in Vancouver.

Friday, February 2 marked the Ecohydrology Research Group’s sixth annual World Wetlands Day (WWD) celebration at the University of Waterloo. This year’s program featured research presentations, three-minute student presentations, a student poster competition, and an evening public lecture. The symposium had over 90 registrants and was attended by researchers from various universities across southwestern Ontario as well as members of the general public. It even got a Twitter-nod from MP of Waterloo Bardish Chagger.

Friday, January 26 marked the third annual Waterloo Women: Ideas, Makers, Innovators (WIMIn) ideathon event. Students, staff, faculty and alumni joined forces to inspire women to collaborate on developing world-changing ideas leading to potential products, businesses and a shift in mindset on pressing social issues.  The event hopes to leave a direct and sustainable impact in supporting and connecting women and non-binary attendees to become trailblazers in traditionally male-dominated spaces.

School's not quite out for Wayne Brodland who retired from Waterloo Engineering last year.

After more than three decades of teaching and conducting research, he launched the Brodland Commons website, which provides students and others with access to resources he and his teams developed over the years.

Accomplished alumni, outstanding current students and generous supporters were all celebrated when more than 400 people got together last November for the 2017 Waterloo Engineering Awards Dinner.

The annual event honoured graduates in three categories and a foundation dedicated to helping produce engineers, plus hundreds of top students for their academic and extracurricular achievements.

Pearl Sullivan, dean of Waterloo Engineering, wrapped up the evening at the University’s Federation Hall by urging everyone to wear their connections to the Faculty on their sleeves.

Staff, students and faculty members at the University of Waterloo are working together to end gender-based violence on campus.  Inspired by UN’s HeForShe Movement, the HeForShe Ideathon hopes to collectively brainstorm ways to create a positive campus culture, where the impacts of sexual violence are understood and innovative solutions are created to prevent future incidents from happening.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, University Professor and holds the Canada Research Chair and NSERC Industrial Research Chair in New Analytical Methods and Technologies.
