Russell Giles jokes that after this past weekend’s Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race he doesn’t know what he’ll do with his spare time.

Leading up to the race hosted by Waterloo’s Faculty of Engineering, Russell, the captain of Waterloo’s Concrete Toboggan team, spent an average of 50-hours a week during the past couple of months working on the group’s toboggan. 

Gerard Laderoute, a Kitchener resident who has been living with dementia for over nine years, knows first-hand the challenges of navigating communities that aren’t equipped to support people like him. “It’s very frustrating and humiliating when you can’t remember,” says Laderoute, “so we try to bring awareness that people have difficulties, and that the more agitated people are the worse it becomes”

On January 7, 2008, the University of Waterloo School of Pharmacy ran its first class. The School had 90 students, six faculty members, and only a handful of staff.

In a nationwide survey of Canadian youth, over half of those who had ever consumed an energy drink had reported experiencing an adverse health event, including rapid heartbeat, nausea, and in rare cases, seizures.

Currently, Canadian legislation is meant to prohibit energy drinks from being marketed to children and energy drinks are not recommend to be used by people participating in sporting activities.

From Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s opening remarks at Hack the North on campus to advancements in autonomous vehicles and discoveries about our universe, it’s been an exciting 60^th anniversary year for the University of Waterloo.

Some of the 2017 highlights include the student-design team Waterloop competing in Elon Musk’s Hyperloop Pod Competition, Waterloo’s first gender equity hackathon, and a new partnership with Amazon supporting AI research.  Again and again Waterloo students, faculty, and staff have been at the forefront of innovation.

Environment’s favourite tradition at this time of year
