Ten student teams from the University of Waterloo will pitch their startup ideas today for a chance to compete for the Hult Prize, worth $1 million USD.

The Hult Prize is a global challenge where some of the world’s brightest business minds compete to solve the planet’s greatest social problems through the development of innovative, sustainable startups. This year’s competitors will present their ideas to build a sustainable, scalable startup enterprise that restores the rights and dignity of 10 million refugees by 2022.

“The 2008 recession stole our leisure time, our volunteer time, our living standards and our sleep – and we never got them back,” said Bryan Smale, director of the CIW. “There is a massive gap between how well the economy is doing and Canadians’ wellbeing, and that gap grew during the recession.”

In 2008, the gap between GDP and the CIW was 21 per cent. By 2010 it was 24.5 per cent. By 2014 it had grown to 28.1 per cent.

Health-care students across Ontario will be able to learn how to deliver high-quality care to their transgender patients with a free online educational program developed by the University of Waterloo’s School of Pharmacy and McMaster University’s School of Medicine.

“Our goal was to create a module that would give all health-care students a firm basis so that they would feel confident working with the transgender population,” explains Elaine Lillie, project co-lead and Director of Interprofessional Education and Curriculum Development at the School of Pharmacy.

The University of Waterloo’s Faculty of Arts will host a free public lecture and panel discussion, entitled Digital Dependencies: How we upload and offload ourselves on Monday, November 21.

The lecture explores the impacts and implications of social media, fitness apps and smartphone reliance on our everyday lives. Three experts along with Douglas Peers, Dean of Arts at Waterloo, will share insights and research on the perks and pitfalls of uploading and offloading ourselves.

Waterloo’s School of Pharmacy has created a video to help opioid users and their loved ones administer a life-saving drug they can now get directly from their local pharmacist.

High praise came with some practical advice Tuesday as the federal government formally announced recent financial support for developed-in-Waterloo technology that is changing the way competitive swimmers train.

University of Waterloo is the top school in Canada for computer science and engineering, according to the US News' Global University Subject-area Rankings.

The US News ranking rates 1,000 universities in more than 60 countries in 22 subject disciplines. Computer science at Waterloo moved up one spot to 18^th this year while engineering held strong in the 47^th spot.

Hundreds of students, faculty and staff volunteers from the University of Waterloo will pay it forward to communities in Waterloo, Stratford and Cambridge this Friday with a range of events for Random Act of Kindness Day®.

The University is again partnering with The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation and the Stratford Perth Community Foundation to engage citizens in small acts of kindness and generosity to build a stronger community.
