Friday, July 1, 2016 marks the 32nd annual University of Waterloo Canada Day Celebration in partnership with our Federation of Students. We’re building another exceptional event to thank our community for its support, and hope to see upwards of 60,000 regional residents on campus, sharing their national and Warrior pride.

The Board of Governors has reappointed Feridun Hamdullahpur as president and vice-chancellor of the University of Waterloo for a second term, beginning July 1, 2017. He will serve in the role until June 30, 2021.

More than 5,400 students received degrees as part of the University of Waterloo's 112^th convocation, which took place this week. There were 4,467 undergraduate degrees and 966 graduate degrees handed out at ceremonies taking place over five days.

What can you do with an arts degree? New Waterloo arts grads say opportunities in the digital economy are growing for them as business leaders look for employees who can build bridges between technology and the people who use it.

Two graduates from the first cohort of Waterloo’s Global Business and Digital Arts (GBDA) program are launching their careers with giants of the digital tech sector.

Richard Yim grew up in Cambodia where the fear of stepping on landmines was part of every child’s life. As a young boy, Yim dreamed of inventing technology that would put an end to landmine casualties around the world.

“After war, when peace comes and bullets stop flying, landmines are still in the ground,” says Yim, a new graduate of Waterloo Engineering. “Children shouldn’t have to be afraid to step off the beaten path. They should be able to walk to school and hike and explore their world without fear.”

Convocation is a huge milestone. The entire university comes together to celebrate years of hard work, and our phenomenal graduates embark on a new stage of life as proud Waterloo Alumni. So inevitably, it’s the kind of thing that takes some preparation. Chilling replicas of Holocaust architecture as featured in an Auschwitz gas chamber – the work of a team of University of Waterloo School of Architecture professors and students – are now being showcased at a renowned exhibition of architecture in Venice, Italy.

OTTAWA, ON (Monday, June 6, 2016) — Foreign diplomats will gather with policy, business, and academic leaders in Ottawa on Wednesday to compare various national approaches to using innovation policies in order to achieve high growth in a low-growth world.

The University of Waterloo hosts the event, which features an interactive panel of Ambassadors from Germany, Israel and South Korea. Kelly Gillis, Associate Deputy Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, will moderate the panel.
