A series of high-profile speakers shed light on the key ingredients in building successful innovation-based economies during 50 hours of high-intensity talks and tours at the annual Waterloo Innovation Summit on Thursday.

Following the success of last year’s Hack the North, the University of Waterloo will once again host Canada’s largest international hackathon.

When industry works hand-in-hand with researchers, ownership of intellectual property (IP) rights worth millions of dollars can be at stake.

At many institutions, IP rights are closely tied to corporate donations. Other universities view them as income.

The University of Waterloo was among the first universities to make their position clear: Intellectual property is owned by the inventor.

The Department of Kinesiology at Waterloo and the Heart and Stroke Foundation are hosting the event — entitled Quiet Research, Loud Results — to raise awareness about heart health and stroke recovery, and to showcase how pioneering research is creating survivors. Admission is free.

Attendees can enter to win door prizes such as a gift pack from Goodness Me!, a gift certificate for a round of  golf at Doon Valley and a CPR kit.

Professor Markus Moos, assistant professor in the Faculty of Environment, will give a talk tomorrow to discuss how the values, preferences and priorities of the millennial generation could affect your work, commute, home and community—both now and in the future.

The talk is taking place at 10 p.m. ET on Tuesday, September 16. It will be available via live webcast from Simon Fraser University.

Six young women entering STEM disciplines in science, technology, engineering and mathematics will begin their studies this year with $12,000 HeForShe IMPACT Scholarships from the University of Waterloo.

The University of Waterloo HeForShe IMPACT Scholarships will annually award six female students who apply to science, technology, engineering and math programmes – known as STEM – with $12,000 each for the duration of their studies.

The annual Black and Gold Day has been a trademark event for first-year University of Waterloo students since the late 1990’s. The tradition continues at Fall Orientation 2015 with a varsity game featuring our own Waterloo Warriors.
