Estimates suggest that up to 12 per cent of Canadians under the age of 25 are young carers.

The new study surveyed 58 adult and children’s community services in the Waterloo region about the support they offer young carers. The findings revealed that 24 per cent of agencies routinely ask if there is a young person in the household with a client they serve, and less than a quarter of those ask what responsibilities this young person has within the household.  More than 58 per cent of the agencies surveyed do not provide any support to their clients' young carers.

The University of Waterloo and Maplesoft announced a partnership to provide effective, engaging, online education for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) courses on January 21, 2015.

Kartik Talwar wanted something more out of the University of Waterloo when he arrived as a student in 2010: information, and lots of it.

It wasn’t that it didn’t exist; it was just in scattered digital nooks and crannies. Talwar, who graduates this year in math and physics, sought a single source from which to shape his student life, a giant repository of data about programs, courses, timetables and services.

So he built one, invited others to contribute and collaborate, and thus added his weight behind the University’s advance into the world of open data.

The Waterloo Pump was invented in 1978 by University of Waterloo professors Alan Plumtree and Alfred Rudin at the request of Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IRDC). The goal was to invent an inexpensive pump that could be manufactured in developing countries with local materials that could be easily repaired by villagers using readily available materials.

The gala, hosted by the University of Waterloo Chinese Students and Scholars Association (UWCSSA), will be held at the Humanities Theatre in Hagey Hall starting at 7 pm.
