Engineering became the choice of study for Brampton, Ontario-born Al Ismaili (BASc 2007, Electrical) after his best friend and Bamba Group co-founder, Faiz Hirani, headed to the University of Toronto to study electrical engineering a year earlier.
John Phillips (BASc '63) had no idea that being laid off from his toolmaker apprenticeship in 1957 would turn into a pioneering post-secondary adventure. A new university was starting up in Waterloo and they would provide a year of pre-engineering to meet the entrance requirements. That $10 investment to write the entrance tests seemed a stretch at the time but before long, he was on his way to a degree in mechanical engineering.

For the eight million Canadians living in condos, apartments and row housing, second-hand smoke drifting in from other units is more than just a nuisance— it’s a major health hazard.
Ryan Kennedy, a researcher with the Propel Centre for Population Health Impact says that second-hand smoke in multi-unit dwellings can cause everything from ear infections and asthma to life-threatening conditions like cardiovascular disease and cancer.
The University of Waterloo named Robert Lemieux as dean of the Faculty of Science. Professor Lemieux succeeds current dean Terry McMahon, who completes his term on June 30, 2015.
He joins Waterloo from Queen’s University, where he is currently a professor in the Department of Chemistry and serves as associate dean (research) in the Faculty of Arts and Science.
Professor Sriram Narasimhan, from the Faculty of Engineering at Waterloo, will receive $100,000 for his research into smart infrastructure. He is cross-appointed to Waterloo’s departments of civil and environmental engineering and mechanical and mechatronics engineering.
