While Canadians celebrate Black History Month, it’s important to reflect on the historic reality of the African-Canadian experience, says Jim Walker, a University of Waterloo history professor.

Walker points out that during the First World War, Canada had a segregated black labour unit — the Nova Scotia 2 Construction Battalion. It’s also important to recall that black veterans were buried in a segregated cemetery in Halifax, he says.

The University of Waterloo is closed today (Friday, February 8) due to poor weather conditions. All campuses, including Kitchener, Stratford, and Cambridge, are closed.

This closing will remain in effect until 7:00 a.m. tomorrow (Saturday, February 9).

Jaclyn Blacklock is a Waterloo researcher who wants to know how leisure protects workers from stress on the job. So, when she saw an opportunity to talk directly to a Canadian astronaut working on the International Space Station (ISS) she jumped at the chance.

“It’s not every day you get to speak to someone in outer space. I think it’s pretty cool,” said Blacklock, a PhD student in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies.
