WATERLOO, Ont. (Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012) – The president of Stanford University, whose groundbreaking work has had a considerable impact on modern computer architecture, is among the four recipients of honorary doctorates to be presented at the University of Waterloo's fall convocation ceremonies October 19 and 20.

Age may be getting the best of them, but there is much to learn from the silver-haired residents who will soon be living on the University of Waterloo’s North Campus.

In an initiative that’s the first of its kind in Canada, a long-term care facility will be built as part of the Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging (RIA). 

Ron Schlegel, the former health studies and gerontology professor who co-owns Schlegel Villages, is the primary donor and driving force behind the Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging. 

The University of Waterloo has focused on entrepreneurship for many years. In conjunction with our co-op program, our students receive a rare experiential learning component. The university’s Enterprise Co-op program encourages students to take their learning even further. E Co-op gives Waterloo students the unique opportunity to navigate their way through starting a business while simultaneously earning a co-op credit.

International experts in the fields of insurance and risk are discussing the financial costs of living longer as they meet at the 8^th International Longevity Risk and Capital Markets Solutions conference, hosted by the University of Waterloo.

WATERLOO, Ont. (Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012) - An international research team including several scientists from the University of Waterloo has achieved quantum teleportation over a record-breaking distance of 143 kilometres through free space.

The experiment saw the successful teleportation of quantum information — in this case, the states of light particles, or photons — between the Canary Islands of La Palma and Tenerife.  The breakthrough is a crucial step toward quantum communications via satellite.

WATERLOO, Ont. (Tuesday, August 28, 2012) - A distinguished group of Canadian and international experts will gather in Waterloo Sept. 6 for a public discussion of academic freedom in the context of university partnership agreements.

Co-hosted by the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University, in partnership with the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada, the Perspectives on Academic Freedom conference will feature speakers and panelists representing a range of viewpoints from the academic community in Canada and abroad.

WATERLOO, Ont. (Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012) - The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) has again named the University of Waterloo among the top 200 universities in the world. Waterloo's results place it seventh among 22 Canadian institutions.

Waterloo is within the 151-200 range of ranked institutions. After 100, the next 400 universities appear in groups, and not assigned a specific number.
