Campaign Waterloo makes a $613.2 million impact on Canada, the world

WATERLOO, Ont. (Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2010) - Close to 250 volunteers and donors celebrated the closing of the second most successful university fundraising campaign in Canadian history. Campaign Waterloo ended with $613.2 million in donations, more than twice its original target, and is allowing the University of Waterloo to help transform Canada and the world in important areas that include healthy aging, climate change and energy, quantum-nano research, digital media, quantitative finance, architecture and international affairs.

WATERLOO, Ont. (Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010) - The University of Waterloo’s annual science open house will introduce children and their parents to a variety of fun and hands-on activities and experiments this weekend.

The free event, hosted by the faculty of science, offers activities and demonstrations aimed at children from kindergarten to Grade 8, as well as their families.

WATERLOO, Ont. (Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010) - Dr. Peter Ratcliffe, a renowned medical doctor and biological researcher, will reveal why he became a scientist to local high school students at a talk hosted by the University of Waterloo on Oct. 26.

Ratcliffe will give a morning lecture about why he entered the field of medicine and the kind of research he is currently conducting in his oxygen sensing group at the University of Oxford in England. He will also deliver an open academic lecture in the afternoon entitled How Cells Sense Oxygen.

WATERLOO, Ont. (Friday, Oct. 15, 2010) - The faculty of engineering at the University of Waterloo will next week celebrate the grand opening of its new $55-million Engineering 5 building, which contains a world- leading student design centre and an electromagnetic radiation laboratory.

The six-storey Engineering 5 also provides much-needed space for students, professors and researchers in the departments of mechanical and mechatronics engineering, systems design engineering, and electrical and computer engineering.

WATERLOO, Ont. (Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010) - More than 150 young women interested in what a future in engineering could hold for them will make their way to the University of Waterloo campus on Saturday, Oct. 16 for the sixth annual Go Eng Girl! event. The girls, in Grades 7 to 10, will have the chance to discover firsthand what engineering is all about.

WATERLOO, Ont. (Monday, Oct. 4, 2010) - The University of Waterloo today officially opened its new world-class Energy Research Centre, which will support cutting-edge research and technology development in energy conversion.

At the opening ceremony this morning, the university also announced the appointment of University of Waterloo professor Claudio Cañizares as the inaugural Hydro One Chair in Power Engineering. The Hydro One Chair in Power Engineering is funded by a $2.5-million agreement signed last year with Hydro One Networks Inc.

WATERLOO, Ont. (Monday, Sept. 27, 2010) - Joe MacInnis, a renowned deep-sea explorer and researcher, will share his insights into the catastrophic BP oil spill and its impact during a public talk this week at the University of Waterloo.

MacInnis, who was the first man to dive beneath the North Pole, will deliver this year's TD Canada Trust Walter Bean Lecture, entitled Oilstorm: Leadership Lessons from the Gulf of Mexico. It will be held Thursday, Sept. 30 at 4 p.m. in the Humanities Theatre, located in the J.G. Hagey Hall of the Humanities.

University of Waterloo welcomes local community to Homecoming 2010

WATERLOO, Ont. (Monday, Sept. 20, 2010) - The University of Waterloo is inviting the local community to help celebrate Homecoming 2010 with a barbecue on Friday, Sept. 24 and a series of activities on Saturday, Sept. 25.

"You don’t have to be a Waterloo grad to enjoy Homecoming,” said alumni officer Chantel Franklin. “This is a great event, especially for families with young children. There’s plenty to see and do, and most of our activities are free.”
