Edith Law is a professor at the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science, where she co-directs the Human-Computer Interaction Lab. Her research delves into social computing technology, machine intelligence interactions and the design and user experience of technology that upholds important human values.

We asked Law how we can ethically harness the power of new technologies for the betterment of humanity.

Many science students begin their undergraduate degrees already thinking about what comes next. For some, it is progressing in a research career or jumping into the job market, but for others, it has always been the dream of becoming a doctor or a veterinarian. With each course and elective, they meticulously plan their undergraduate studies guided by their passion and purpose for studying medicine. For these aspiring medical or veterinary practitioners, every step is building toward a successful application that will lead to an interview. 

The University of Waterloo, in collaboration with the Perimeter Institute, hosted the TRuST Scholarly Network’s Conversations on Artificial Intelligence (AI), a dynamic and engaging discussion that delved into the societal impact of AI. The event was also supported by the Waterloo AI Institute, which is dedicated to developing human-centered AI for social good, fostering trust with industry partners, and scaling responsible solutions to enhance lives.

For Ria Menon, a biomedical science student at the University of Waterloo, conducting research plays a large role in her program. But getting involved in research often requires undergraduate students to take 400-level classes, also known as senior thesis courses. 

But if students are lucky enough to know someone who is currently involved in research, those network connections can help them advance in research opportunities earlier in their studies, Menon explains. 

"Blue Monday" has arrived. This day gets its name for being considered the most depressing day of the year and usually lands on the third Monday of January. With the increased darkness of winter, shorter days and the stress of starting a new study term, the University of Waterloo is focusing on sharing student mental health and well-being supports. Blue Monday also provides an opportunity to bring mental health conversations front and center to reduce the stigma associated with mental health and ensure that access to supports and resources are made easier. 

Before coming to the University of Waterloo, Christy Lee volunteered at hospitals and long-term care homes, working closely with patients and residents to help reduce the workload for staff. But Lee found that with the current communication call system, nurses and personal support workers do not know what types of requests the patients are making, and which patients need immediate help.  

Canadians are buying more electric vehicles (EV) than ever, with one in 10 now owning EVs. The number is set to increase as consumers look for ways to reduce their environmental impact and capitalize on government incentives.

With the growing market share of EVs, there is also an increasing need for talent in the design, development and maintenance of electric vehicles as well as support infrastructure from charging stations, improved battery technology and energy generation.
