The pandemic has revealed global vulnerabilities and opportunities. Will we see new political trends internationally? Will local trade be encouraged? Will we still be able to travel the world?

During Wednesday’s first of two Beyond the Headlines community lecture series, moderated by CBC Radio One’s Craig Norris, University of Waterloo researchers explored whether our post-COVID-19 society will be more responsive or more divisive.

Playing varsity hockey at Waterloo is one of the most important events in my life.

I don't think you can replicate the type of camaraderie that you build by being "all in" as a student athlete in a sport like hockey in Canada. My best friends are guys I played with on those teams in the ‘80s, and we're still having as much fun now as we did back then.

She is the type of student who is not easily forgotten, wrote her nominator. The positive impact Kiera McMaster leaves on her peers and the wider community was recently recognized when she won the Faculty of Arts Award for Excellence in Service.

For graduating PhD students, completing their dissertation defence is a significant milestone, as well as a time to celebrate their accomplishments with friends and family.

Lindsay Eberlin may be graduating during a worldwide pandemic, but it hasn’t stopped her from reflecting on the good things that came from her experience as a Therapeutic Recreation student and what she wants to do with her life.

“My time at Waterloo was more than I had imagined,” she says. “It was filled with many opportunities and memorable experiences that allowed for personal growth and accomplishment.”

Eberlin says the hands-on experiences her program provided developed her confidence and skills in her field.

Sports have always played an integral role in bringing a community together. From standing in the crowd and cheering on our varsity teams to celebrating athletic milestones, Waterloo strives to find a space for everyone — all students, faculties, staff and the wider Waterloo community.

Dear colleagues and students,

I am writing to you today to announce the formation of the President’s Anti-racism Taskforce (PART).

While we continue to see the number of positive and recovered cases change across the world, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to be a threat to everyone’s health and well-being. There’s a global race to produce a vaccine that will be effective in protecting us from the virus and perhaps be our best hope for ending the pandemic.

Monica Hoang had no idea earlier this year that she’d be spending the last few months of her PhD working on the design of a COVID-19 testing kit.

The School of Pharmacy student moved back to her hometown when the University of Waterloo decided to go online for the spring term and planned to do her PhD defence digitally.

Then an old friend in the pharmacy program messaged her to say his colleagues were looking for somebody with a genetics background to join their team. The next day, Hoang was at a meeting in Waterloo’s Velocity startup incubator in downtown Kitchener.
