Societal Futures

In 2004, the University of Waterloo’s School of Architecture moved from the Waterloo campus to a repurposed silk mill in Cambridge, Ontario, to expand its facilities. The school’s new location in the heart of historic Galt was supported by the City of Cambridge and local businesses who recognized its potential to revitalize the municipality’s downtown core.  

The University of Waterloo is known for being one of the world’s leading innovative research institutions. However, the University also has a strong commitment to advancing teaching excellence and pedagogical innovation.

The thrill of same-day delivery, binging Netflix or having food delivered straight to your door is satisfying and a perfect dopamine hit in the digital age. It is also a form of happiness rooted in consumerism, where convenience is everything. However, these quick fixes come at a cost: our deeper well-being and the collective health of society and the environment.

A passion for art and drawing led Nicole Cao to pursue a degree in architecture, a journey that has now led to graduate studies at Yale University. Studying at the University of Waterloo’s School of Architecture and living in Cambridge, Ontario provided Cao with unique experiences that inspired a desire to continue learning and researching in her field. 

For Aparajita Bhattacharya, who is graduating with a Master of Arts degree in Public Issues Anthropology, the interdisciplinary nature of her graduate student experience opened doors to new research paths and an exciting future.  

With a background in data science and a passion for anthropology, particularly bioarchaeology, Bhattacharya’s research explored how bioinformatics can be integrated with anthropology and bioarchaeology to answer questions about infectious disease in the ancient past, and the social and cultural contexts in which they emerged.  

The University of Waterloo's Cybersecurity and Privacy Institute (CPI) hosted its annual conference on October 10, 2024, bringing together academic and industry experts to address pressing cybersecurity issues in Canada.  

The conference panels didn’t hold back and started with an important discussion on the potential for cyberattacks and how financial institutions can safeguard customer data in this evolving digital landscape.

This past September, the City of Waterloo lit up with the annual Lumen Festival, which explores the interplay of light, art and technology.

In an era where climate change is more visible than ever — rising urban temperatures, extreme weather events and increasing instances of poor air quality from wildfire smoke — the demand for accurate and trustworthy information is critical. The University of Waterloo, in collaboration with the Waterloo Climate Institute, hosted an impactful community lecture addressing this pressing issue.

Leveraging co-op opportunities, Waterloo students have been making a huge impact across various industries including business, technology and health.

Many of these breakthroughs occur at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), Canada’s largest single hospital research institute, and one of Waterloo’s top co-op employers.

From designing image detection tools to developing 3D neurovascular prototypes and building surgical robot simulators, producing disruptive technologies is at the core of what our students do in advancing the future of health care in Canada.
