Dear University of Waterloo community,

Today, I begin my first full week as President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Waterloo. It is an extraordinary honour and a deeply meaningful homecoming.

Waterloo has shaped much of who I am. I first arrived as a student and experienced the power of co-op as an undergraduate, felt the energy of Waterloo’s research environment as a graduate student, and discovered the joy of teaching here as a sessional instructor. Those experiences influenced how I think, how I learn, and how I lead.

I return with deep respect for what this remarkable community has built. Waterloo was founded on a bold idea: that academic excellence, research, entrepreneurship, and real-world experience could come together to change lives and strengthen society. That idea continues to define and distinguish Waterloo today. It also reminds us that our greatest contributions have come when we have thought differently and worked together with shared purpose.

As I begin, my first priority is to listen and learn. Since March, I have had more than 100 initial meetings across this vibrant community. In every conversation, I have been struck by Waterloo’s greatest strength – it’s people.

Our students, faculty, and staff are innovative, dedicated, and deeply committed to making a difference. Together, you have built a University that is not only a national leader, but a global force in research, learning, and entrepreneurship.

In the months ahead, I look forward to continuing these conversations with students, faculty, staff, University leaders, alumni, and partners in Waterloo Region and beyond. I want to understand what inspires you, what challenges you see on the horizon, and where you think the most promising opportunities lie for Waterloo to strengthen its global standing. Waterloo’s greatest asset is our University community. Supporting your success in teaching, research, learning, and community impact will be a personal priority.

The University was founded on the resolve to be bold and unconventional, a deep understanding of the value of entrepreneurship, and a strong commitment to making a positive social impact. As we look to the future, we will build on our defining strengths – co-op and experiential education, transformational research, entrepreneurship, and our strong connections with communities – while embracing the full breadth and potential of a comprehensive University.

Thank you for the warm welcome I have already received. I am grateful to Dr. Vivek Goel for his leadership and for the thoughtful transition he has supported. I look forward to meeting many of you, learning from you, and working together to shape Waterloo’s future.

Sincerely,
Bill
