Waterloo marks 15 straight years as top research university

The University of Waterloo has been designated Research University of the Year among Canadian comprehensive universities by Research Infosource Inc. for the 15th consecutive year. 

Waterloo’s President and Vice-Chancellor, Vivek Goel, says the University’s research excellence stems from its continued focus on empowering its students, faculty, and community to seek out solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges.

Waterloo esports gets boost with new scholarship

The University of Waterloo Games Institute has secured $25,000 of funding per year over two years from the Ontario government to provide scholarships to students pursuing careers in the gaming and esports industries.

The Games Institute is an interdisciplinary research network hub that seeks to advance the study, design and purpose of interactive, immersive technologies and experiences. It is a key part of the Waterloo tech ecosystem for its role in research, education, knowledge dissemination, outreach and collaboration.

New app idea helps pharmacists quickly connect with patients for prescription needs

The Pharmasave Business Competition awards a third-year Waterloo School of Pharmacy student team a $5,000 prize for an innovative business model in the field of pharmacy.

“Every year, the Pharmasave Business Competition proves pharmacists can be entrepreneurs. Our course and the competition are unique to the School and provide students with the opportunity to practice the skills of entrepreneurship while interacting with the robust start-up ecosystem in our community,” says Dean Pacey, adjunct lecturer at the School of Pharmacy.

President emeritus and distinguished alum named to Order of Canada

A president emeritus of Waterloo and an alum and former member of the University’s Board of Governors have been appointed to the Order of Canada.

Feridun Hamdullahpur and John Lounds were named members of the Order of Canada on December 29, 2022. Hamdullahpur’s honour is in recognition of his groundbreaking research in mechanical and mechatronics engineering and his visionary leadership in academia. Lounds, former president and CEO of Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC), was honoured for his substantial contributions to land conservation across the country.

Latest Vanier Graduate Scholarships and Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships announced at Waterloo

A walk in the park provided inspiration for a striking photograph that earned national recognition this week for an engineering professor at the University of Waterloo.

Dr. Zhao Pan was in a 500-year-old Beijing park in his native China after a sudden rainfall when he noticed huge drops of water hanging from the tips of leaves in cypress trees.

Waterloo ranks top university in Canada for entrepreneurs

The University of Waterloo once again ranks in the first spot amongst its Canadian peers for producing the most successful entrepreneurs with undergraduate degrees according to the 2022 PitchBook university rankings. Waterloo also moves up one spot from last year to 21st in the world for founders.
