All six teams that earned $10,000 each at engineering's pitch contest developed creative solutions to challenges ranging from making rock climbing safer to providing spinal cord injury patients with increased mobility.

The winning teams of senior-year engineering students were narrowed down from 10 who took three minutes each to explain their projects to a panel of judges in the Norman Esch Entrepreneurship Awards for Capstone Design contest held remotely on April 8.

Two architects who have compiled a long list of accomplishments since graduating from the University of Waterloo added to it this week with a prestigious award from a national organization.

Waterloo Engineering students who wowed judges with their presentation at the recent online Canadian Engineering Competition (CEC) received an award in a new category created during the event to recognize their project work.

Waterloo is ranked in the top 100 for the broad faculty areas of Engineering & Technology (38th) and Natural Sciences (79th).

Before his start at Waterloo, Chester Dawes (BMath ’99, PDAcc ’99) didn’t know what a high-powered career in finance could look like. To begin with, his parents emigrated from Jamaica in the early ‘70s to start a new life; Chester and his two brothers grew up going to schools in Canada where most kids did not look like them. As a child growing up in an immigrant family environment, Chester’s career goals were quite humble: “My measure of success was a career where I could go on a vacation and not worry about where the money came from.”
