A team of Management Engineering students at the University of Waterloo made the most of a second chance this week to become the big winners at an annual pitch contest for startups.

Thevany Narayanamoorthy, Dhruv Gupta, Garvita Rai, Rhea Philip and Sam Villaluz just missed the cut during a preliminary process to pick 15 finalists from over 50 applicants for the Norman Esch Entrepreneurship Awards for Capstone Design.

March 18 to 22 is National Co-op and Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) Week, and the University of Waterloo is celebrating its students’ experience-driven learning opportunities.

More than 22,000 students — approximately 55 per cent of Waterloo’s student population — are currently enrolled in co-op work terms. With the opportunity to develop professional skills by participating in four to six co-op terms, having access to a network of more than 7,000 employers and earning $33,000 to $90,000 — no one does co-op like the University of Waterloo.

Christine Muschik has been pondering some of the world’s biggest questions since she was 15 years old and first discovered her passion for physics. Now, her research into high-energy physics has been recognized with the 2019 Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship in Physics.

Finding a collaborative environment at the Institute for Quantum Computing

Muschik joined the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) in November 2017 as an assistant professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Her work centres on quantum simulations for high-energy physics.

There is much going on in the nation’s capital, but people on Parliament Hill took time this week to honour an esteemed Canadian, Canada’s newest Nobel laureate. Donna Strickland, a professor of physics at Waterloo, received a wide and warm welcome in Ottawa Tuesday, from Rideau Hall to the House of Commons, and including a reception celebrating her achievement. Strickland won the Nobel Prize in Physics 2018 for developing chirped pulse amplification.

Future innovations rely on researchers doing basic science, Canada’s newest Nobel laureate told a near-capacity crowd during the President’s Lecture at the University of Waterloo.
