Leah Kristufek had an “aha moment” when Gordon Stubley briefly spoke to her first-year engineering class. Later, when she became one of his students, Kristufek discovered that inspiring moments would be an everyday occurrence in the engineering professor’s class.

Four graduates of the University of Waterloo beat out more than 3,700 other applicants to make the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) short list to recruit two new astronauts.

Thomas Karakolis, who graduated with a PhD in kinesiology, said he was pleasantly surprised to make the cut. “Astronauts are human participants in one giant experiment. I think that’s what appeals to me. I’m a very curious person, and there is nothing more unknown than space,” said Karakolis.

The University of Waterloo is among the top 50 universities in the world for strongest global connections, according to a new ranking.

Future plans and past achievements were highlighted when hundreds of students, staff, faculty members, alumni and donors gathered for the 2016 Waterloo Engineering Awards Dinner.

The event that recognized top students also celebrated distinguished graduates in four categories and a Waterloo Region family with a record of generous support for the Faculty and the University.

Waterloop - a student design team building a commuter pod to one day take you from Toronto to Montreal in 30 minutes - will test their prototype at the SpaceX Hyperloop Pod competition on January 27-29.
