Community members who embody the University of Waterloo’s spirit of innovation and contribute to making Waterloo Region strong, will be eligible for the new President’s Community Impact Awards.

The awards, announced by Feridun Hamdullahpur, president and vice-chancellor, were created in honour of the University of Waterloo’s 60^th anniversary. Nominations open on June 1.

A road that runs between the three Faculty of Mathematics buildings on campus is being named in honour of William Tutte, a brilliant mathematics professor who helped establish the Faculty as a global powerhouse.

A University of Waterloo student who is helping to educate people about a serious medical condition is among six students the University is recognizing for their outstanding achievements in co-operative education. 

A company that uses artificial intelligence to help make water utilities safer and more efficient was among the grand-prize winners at the Velocity Fund Finals held today at the University of Waterloo. Velocity is a comprehensive entrepreneurship program at Waterloo.

Four professors from three faculties are being honoured for their exceptional teaching with the University’s most prestigious teaching honour - the Distinguished Teacher Award (DTA).

The awards will be presented at the spring convocation ceremonies by Mario Coniglio, associate vice-president, academic. In addition to the citation, the four professors will also receive $1,500 to pursue teaching excellence. The 2017 recipients are:

Two teams of engineering students at the University of Waterloo have been awarded $50,000 each to turn their fourth-year projects into startup companies after graduation.

The funding is provided by celebrated Waterloo Engineering graduates Chamath Palihapitiya and his wife Brigette Lau, founders of Social Capital, a Silicon Valley venture capital fund dedicated to solving some of the world’s most difficult problems.

The Water Institute at the University of Waterloo and the de Gaspé Beaubien Foundation launched a three-year partnership that will combine water research and tech to mitigate threats to our vital water resources.
