He served as a peacekeeper in the Former Republic of Yugoslavia, worked with European allies on a humanitarian mission in Eastern Africa, and ran a Canadian field hospital in Afghanistan— but for kinesiology alumnus Colonel Jim Kile, his new role may be the most challenging yet.

As Canada’s Army Surgeon, Kile is responsible for overseeing the health and well-being of the Army’s 30,000 troops.   

When the Waterloo Warriors men’s golf team hoisted the Ruttan Cup as Ontario Champions this fall, it marked an iconic moment in the history of the University of Waterloo. The win was the 100^th provincial championship for the Warriors since they began competing in 1957.

Voltera V-One, a custom circuit board printer developed by University of Waterloo engineering students, has taken top prize in the International James Dyson Award competition - beating out a record 710 entries from 20 countries.

Mohit Verma graduates this fall but he has already taken up a post-doctoral research position in a renowned lab at Harvard University, supported by a prestigious Banting fellowship. Verma credits his experiences at Waterloo with helping to set him on his successful research path in George Whitesides Research Group at Harvard.

 “I think Waterloo has basically shaped my whole career. I've spent so much time here and had so many different experiences,” says Verma.

More than 2,300 students became University of Waterloo alumni over two days at Fall Convocation 2015. The entire Waterloo community congratulates them as they emerge as the leaders of tomorrow.

Amir Sharif may be a new grad this week, but thanks to Waterloo’s co-op program he’s already worked at startups in Waterloo and Silicon Valley and is looking forward to a full-time position at Facebook.

The University of Waterloo celebrates its 111th convocation ceremonies on Friday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24. President and Vice-Chancellor Feridun Hamdullahpur congratulates the new grads and invites them to share the experience on social media.

The Honourable Roy J. Romanow, former premier of Saskatchewan, will be among the honourees when more than 2,300 students receive degrees at the University of Waterloo's convocation ceremonies taking place this week.

Premier from 1991 to 2001, Romanow went on to lead the Royal Commission on the Future of Health Care in Canada, resulting in a landmark report in 2002. He will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws and address convocation at the ceremony for the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences and Faculty of Science on Friday, October 23 at 10 a.m.

Convocation is a ceremony of ancient traditions and weighty symbols.

The Mace, a solid silver and ebony wand, was given to the University in 1965 by the family of the late Stanley F. Leavine. It was designed by Toronto artist Eric Aldwinckle and crafted by silversmith Harold Stacey to symbolize the university as it was at that time.

The Mace displays lions, chevrons, and the shield of Ontario, from which the University holds its charter to grant degrees.

Waterloo's 111th Convocation ceremonies will take place on October 23 and 24 with more than 2,300 degrees will be conferred. With this latest addition, Waterloo's alumni club will expand to more than 180,000 members.
