Students graduating at the 105th convocation on Oct 19 and 20, will be the newest members to join Waterloo’s increasingly global club of alumni. From Albania to Zambia, Waterloo’s 160,000 grads currently live in 144 countries around the world, and with each new convocation ceremony the number continues to grow.
WATERLOO, Ont. (Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012) – For the fifth year in a row, the University of Waterloo is Research University of the Year among Canadian comprehensive universities, says Research Infosource Inc.
Convocation is a ceremony of ancient traditions and weighty symbols.
Once graduating students have entered the ceremony, faculty members enter walking two by two, followed by university officials, all in their academic finery. Near the end of the procession, a selected faculty member will carry the Mace, a traditional symbol of the university’s authority.

WATERLOO, Ont. (Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012) - A University of Waterloo professor has been named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
Professor Claudio Cañizares earned the honour under the society’s Applied Sciences and Engineering Division, and was elected by his peers from a list of exceptional candidates. He teaches in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Waterloo, and specializes in studying electricity generation, transmission and distribution systems.
WATERLOO, Ont. (Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012) - The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) has again named the University of Waterloo among the top 200 universities in the world. Waterloo's results place it seventh among 22 Canadian institutions.
Waterloo is within the 151-200 range of ranked institutions. After 100, the next 400 universities appear in groups, and not assigned a specific number.
