Organizations working to meaningfully improve diversity and inclusion in STEM may be missing a crucial consideration, new research suggests.

Rather than organizations solely focusing on hiring more women or increasing the visibility of women’s workplace achievements, new research highlights the importance of fostering positive workplace social relationships.  Specifically, facilitating male-female friendships might uniquely improve gender equity and inclusion in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.

Projecting into the future

by Brian Caldwell, Faculty of Engineering

A longstanding partnership between Waterloo Engineering researchers and a leading projection company has yielded new technology for a state-of-the-art laser projector.

A patented algorithm developed at the Vision and Image Processing (VIP) Lab drives resolution enhancement in the new M 4K25 RBG projector produced by Christie, a global company with engineering headquarters in Kitchener.

Engineering researchers at the University of Waterloo have teamed up with the federal government and Magna International to help ensure the safety and security of vehicles as they become increasingly autonomous.

Announced today, a $1.6-million project headed by Sebastian Fischmeister, a professor of electrical and computer engineering, involves the development of theories, methods and tools to produce complex automotive software for connected and automated vehicles.

Mathematical modelling and computational fluid dynamics informing aeronautic sustainability

by Jon Parsons, Faculty of Mathematics

As excitement builds across campus for the launch of the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Aeronautics (WISA), researchers in diverse disciplines are showcasing the ways their work connects with the new institute’s mandate.

One of those researchers is Sander Rhebergen, an associate professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics. Rhebergen’s specialization is in computational fluid dynamics. Research in fluid dynamics looks at the ways flow and resistance operate in liquids, gases and plasmas.

Aviation research takes off virtually on campus

by Elizabeth Kleisath, Faculty of Science

The University of Waterloo has recently undertaken a significant step forward in promoting aviation research on campus, through the purchase of a new flight simulator.

The new flight simulator will allow researchers to have priority access to a simulator, which although common technology within flight school settings — including the Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre — they usually prioritize student flight training instead of research efforts.
