Putting Einstein’s theory of general relativity to the test

by Victoria Van Cappellen, Faculy of Science

University of Waterloo astrophysicists are leading a team of researchers who have devised a new way to test Einstein’s theory of general relativity within Sagittarius A* - the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way.

Tim Johannsen and Avery Broderick, along with international colleagues, will use the new method in gravitational conditions that are so extreme, the results will usher in a new era in gravitational research, validating – or disproving – general relativity in its most exotic manifestations.

Twenty-nine researchers at the University of Waterloo will receive $5.7 million from the federal government to advance research and encourage partnerships that will lead to innovative approaches to improve the well-being of Canadians.

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) is awarding the funding through Partnership Grants, Partnership Development Grants, Insight Grants, and Insight Development Grants.

Members have reached a high level of achievement at an early stage of their careers. They represent the emerging generation of scholars and leaders in science and the arts in the country. Membership is for seven years.

"Waterloo is home to researchers making groundbreaking discoveries at all stages of their careers," said Feridun Hamdullahpur, president and vice-chancellor of Waterloo. "The University is pleased to congratulate these talented individuals on this deserved recognition."

Research with "potential to change the world"

by Brian Caldwell, University Relations

David Cory didn’t waste any time getting down to business after Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science for Canada, announced $76.3 million in federal funding Tuesday for a project that will boost the University of Waterloo’s position at the forefront of groundbreaking quantum research.

With about 150 dignitaries, colleagues and other guests on hand in the atrium at the Mike & Ophelia Lazaridis Quantum-Nano Centre, the professor at the helm of the winning initiative seized the opportunity to reach out to potential industry partners and collaborators.

A state-of-the-art automotive research and testing facility officially opened today at the University of Waterloo, setting the stage for technological advances that will benefit both consumers and the environment.

The $10-million Green and Intelligent Automotive (GAIA) Research Facility is the result of a partnership between the University, industry leaders and two levels of government.  GAIA houses the latest high-tech automotive equipment, spread across three labs and covers 4,000 square feet.

by Media Relations

The fellowship of the RSC consists of individuals who have made outstanding contributions in the arts, the humanities, science, and Canadian public life. They have been peer-selected as among the best in their field.

The University of Waterloo's newest RSC fellows are as follows:

Jennifer Clapp, School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability, Faculty of Environment

The Green and Intelligent Automotive (GAIA) Research Facility will allow teams of researchers using the latest tools to develop, test and refine innovations for the next generation of smart, clean vehicles under one roof.

Located in entirely renovated space in the Engineering 3 building on campus, the $10-million lab is the latest infrastructure addition to the Waterloo Centre for Automotive Research (WatCAR), the largest university-based automotive research centre in Canada.
