University of Waterloo Professor Daniel Scott was one of three leading experts who launched a new international Tourism Panel on Climate Change (TPCC) at COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. The panel represents a new era of global collaboration that will support the tourism industry's transition to net-zero emissions and climate resilient tourism development.

The discovery of a 460 km river under the Antarctica ice sheet could be the missing link to climate models.

A team of researchers led by Dr. Christine Dow, a professor in the department of Geography and Environmental Management and cross-appointed to the Department of Applied Mathematics, discovered the river from a series of airborne radar surveys and modelling. Their findings show the ice sheet's base has more active water flow than previously thought, which could make it more susceptible to changes in climate.

A pivotal moment in our collective goal to limit global warming

by Chantal Vallis, Waterloo Climate Institute

This September, Hurricane’s Ian and Fiona underscored what we already know — extreme weather events are increasing in frequency and severity. These events displaced approximately 30 million people worldwide in 2020, and this number is expected to increase in the coming decades because of climate change.

A research team based out of the University of Waterloo has developed a drone-powered device that can use WiFi networks to see through walls.

The device, nicknamed Wi-Peep, can fly near a building and then use the inhabitants’ WiFi network to identify and locate all WiFi-enabled devices inside in a matter of seconds.

Subatomic MRI could lead to new drug therapies

by Media Relations

Researchers at the University of Waterloo and supported by Transformative Quantum Technologies have demonstrated the feasibility of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance diffraction (NMRd) to investigate the lattice structure of crystalline solids on an atomic scale, a feat that had only been possible for larger-scale imaging applications like Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).
