The new head coach of the Waterloo Warriors basketball program has been passionate about all things basketball since he was a toddler.

The youngest of five, Troy Stevenson, a 2015 chemical engineering graduate, spent years watching his siblings play high school basketball.

“I was the half-time show – the chubby little guy running around trying to shoot baskets,” he laughs.

The Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology (WIN) has partnered with Japanese accelerator Landing Pad Tokyo (LPT) to bring University of Waterloo developed technologies to the Japanese market.

“The goal of this partnership is to help Waterloo companies enter the Asian market, and to accelerate the research and development of new technologies through partnerships with Japanese businesses,” said Sushanta Mitra, Executive Director of WIN.

When the first picture of a black hole, a gravitational well from which no light can escape, was unveiled last year, it was a stunning technological feat.

That now-famous image of the black hole known as M87* which is 55 million light years away in the Messier 87 galaxy, was the result of over a decade of work by hundreds of scientists and engineers who are part of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration that created an “earth-sized” telescope out of eight telescope facilities around the world.

Four world-class academics pursuing research to improve society are the inaugural recipients of the AMTD Waterloo Global Talent Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Waterloo.
The five-year program was made possible by a generous donation from the AMTD Foundation, led by Waterloo alumnus Calvin Choi (BA ’01). 

The University of Waterloo, in partnership with several stakeholders, has launched a new platform in Singapore to help address a cybersecurity workforce skills gap in the region.

The new platform — @-Wise Cybersecurity Centre of Excellence — was co-founded with four partners: the Singapore FinTech Association, AMTD Foundation, AMTD Digital and iQ4, a workforce and mobility platform.

For the first time, six employers are being recognized with a Co-operative and Experiential Education (CEE) Employer Impact Award for excellence in their industry and providing outstanding opportunities for Waterloo students. Announced October 8, this year’s recipients include:

Anthony Miller has put in many long days in the seven months since COVID-19 first hit Canada. He’s the experiential learning coordinator for Waterloo Pharmacy’s co-operative education program and along with the experiential team, particularly Sarah de Waal and Professor Nancy Waite, he’s overcome many hurdles to ensure Pharmacy students continue to experience safe co-op work terms.

COVID-19 has impacted 2020 co-op work terms in the winter, spring and Fall Terms, with some jobs being cancelled and others created on very short notice.

In 1972, Scott Vanstone (BMath '70, MMath '71, PhD '74) walked into Ron Mullin’s (MA '60, PhD '64) office and told him he wanted to be his student.  Originally, Scott started studying chemistry at the University of Waterloo, but switched to math.

A group of exceptionally talented incoming students are making their way to Waterloo with a prestigious scholarship in tow.

Thanks to a $100+ million investment by businessman and philanthropist Seymour Schulich, Waterloo has more than doubled its recipient pool from previous years allowing selected students pursuing STEM to begin their post-secondary careers with an extra $80,000 or $100,000.

When schools closed down due to the coronavirus pandemic, parents, teachers and students across Canada turned to the University of Waterloo Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) website, increasing engagement with its courseware by 200 per cent.
