It’s an experience all too common among cancer survivors— when chemotherapy or radiation ends, so does the outpouring of support.
After many years of teaching Spanish to Waterloo students, Camelia Nunez knows beginners learn best by engaging in meaningful conversations. She also knows undergrads spend a lot of time chatting on their smartphones.
So she came up with an idea: Why not use smartphones as a platform for students to receive and respond to messages in their new language?
The University of Waterloo, in partnership with the Waterloo Public Library John M. Harper Branch and the Stork Family YMCA will host a day of free family programming tomorrow.
The event, called Waterloo West Neighbour Fest, encourages local families to come out and make connections in the community through a variety of family-friendly activities. There were more than 200 participants last year. Students from the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies in the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences at Waterloo organize and run the event.

The University of Waterloo has named its Student Design Centre – where students fall “in love with engineering” – in honour of Adel Sedra, former dean of engineering.
But the buzz lately has shifted to the second floor where the University of Waterloo's Student Design Centre (SDC) runs a 3D Print Centre, featuring a Fortus 360mc three-dimensional printer.
For those who use it, it's an innovation machine.
