Director's message: Spring 2019
It only takes a quick glance at the news to tell you that we live in a time of uncertainty. And here at the School, we’re certainly not sheltered from the winds of change.

Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (VOSH) has played an important role with students at the School of Optometry & Vision Science over the years. Many students have traveled abroad to provide optometric services in remote regions of the world that have little or no access to eye care. However, we have only recently formed our own Waterloo Canadian student chapter, and this year we also introduced our first independently organized trip to two remote villages in Senegal, West Africa.
On November 26th more than 200 students, staff and faculty at the School of Optometry & Vision Science gathered for an evening full of practical career advice mixed with inspiration, offered by two of the industry’s key influencers.
In August, as they’ve done for the past three years, WOVS clinicians and students hold a pop-up clinic that’s making a visible difference for kids in one of Toronto’s grittiest neighbourhoods.
The American Academy of Optometry has named WOVS alumna Dr. Barbara Caffrey, OD, PhD, FAAO as its new president. She is the first Canadian woman to lead the Academy.
The School of Optometry & Vision Science has a great number of alumni who are outstanding contributors to both optometry and their communities, going above and beyond to make a difference. To recognize some of these outstanding individuals for their efforts and achievements the School is pleased to present the biennial Alumni of Honour Awards.
A research team has discovered that abnormal vision in childhood can affect the development of higher-level brain areas responsible for things such as attention.
As Director Stan Woo has travelled the country this last year, he’s been sharing an exciting new vision for the School of Optometry & Vision Science. Building on the generosity of donors who have contributed to our clinic renovation project, we’ve reimagined, expanded and rebranded the project to set our sights even higher.
As we look back upon 2018, we have much to be thankful for at the School. We have a vision that has united us ̶ faculty, staff and students ̶ that of Helping People See.
With the November 8 passing of Dr. Irving Baker, Canadian optometry lost a champion who guided its growth as a profession for more than 60 years.
