Biography on Donald Knuth

Donald E. Knuth is a professor emeritus of the art of computer programming, Stanford University, California and is generally recognized as the "Father of Computer Science". After graduating from the Case Institute of Technology with a BS, summa cum laude, and by special vote of the faulty an MS in 1960, he earned his PhD in Mathematics from the California Institute of Technology in 1963.

Beginning as a consultant for Burroughs, Corp., Pasadena, California, 1960-1968, Knuth then taught as assistant and associate professor of mathematics at the California Institute of Technology, 1963-1968, Fletcher Jones professor of computer science, Stanford University, 1977-1989, and in 1990 became professor of the art of computer programming, Stanford University.

Knuth is a member of many professional societies such as the American Guild of Organists, the American Mathematical Society, the Association for Computing Machinery and the Mathematical Association of America. He has given many invited lectures, has been awarded numerous prizes and received honorary doctorates fromĀ  such universities as Oxford, Brown, Concordia, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, and Saint Petersburg University, Russia. His published books include The Art of Computer Programming, Surreal Numbers, The TeXtbook, Computers and Typesetting, The METAFRONT Book, 3:16 Bible Texts Illuminated, and Literate Programming.

Knuth sums up his work in this way: "My main life's work has been to write The Art of Computer Programming, a work-still-in progress that attempts to organize and summarize what is known about the vast subject of computer methods and to give it firm mathematical and historical foundations.

Knuth and his wife, Nancy Jill Carter, have two children.
