Biography on Bartha Knoppers
Bartha Knoppers is a law professor and senior research at the Centre for Public Law Research, Universite de Montreal. She is currently chair of the International Ethics Committee of the Human Genome Organization, and was a member of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's (UNESCOs) International Bioethics Committee that drafted the Universal Declaration on the Human Genome and Human Rights.
Professor Knoppers is past commissioner of the Royal Commission on New Reproductive Technologies, past president of the Canadian Bioethics Society and past vice president of the National Council on Bioethics in Human Research. She has received several prizes and awards including Femme a l-honneur (1998), Chambre de commerce du Montreal metropolitain; Medal of the Quebec Bar (1997); Personality of the year (Science), November 1997, La Presse; and, Scientist of the Year, Radio-Canada, 1996.
