Dr. Edginton invited to attend the Bill & Melinda Gates Research Institute PD Challenge Workshop

Wednesday, March 28, 2018

Dr. Edginton has been invited to the Bill & Melinda Gates Medical Research Institute event -- 2018 PD Challenge Workshop: Collaborating to Improve Translational Medicine in Global Health being held April 26-27, 2018 at the Boston Marriott Copley Place.

The program will feature a mix of main stage presentations and panels with speakers including Bill Gates, Trevor Mundel, President of Global Health at the Gates Foundation, Penny Heaton, CEO of the Gates Medical Research Institute, and Soumya Swaminathan, Deputy Director General of the World Health Organization. The core of the two-day meeting will include small group working sessions (n=150 invitees) designed to develop actionable solutions to two global health product development challenges in translational medicine:

  1. Unleash the Power of Data via Quantitative Science
Participants will explore the full potential of using data and analytics in early development. Challenge teams will first discuss innovative methods to apply data, analytics (e.g., model-based drug development) in Global Health Translational Medicine to better inform evidence generation, hypothesis testing, and decision making. Teams will then identify approaches to drive broad adoption of these new techniques within the Global Health ecosystem.
  2. Proof of Concept (POC) Transition for Efficient Late Stage Development
Participants will develop solutions to minimize unnecessary delays and accelerate time from POC to initiation of pivotal trials, particularly where multiple stakeholders are involved. Challenge teams will first identify common sources of delay – both technical and non-technical – in the transition between pre-POC and post-POC partners. Teams will then develop solutions to address key sources of delay (e.g., defining ideal POC evidence package, creating processes for engaging late-stage partners).
