Dr. Andrea Edginton

Professor; Hallman Director; Associate Dean, Faculty of Science

Dr. Edginton’s research focuses on improving the confidence of physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model outcomes through understanding model inputs and developing modeling workflows.

Specifically, her research examines how the physiology of sub-populations, particularly children, affects the pharmacokinetics of drugs and how this information can be integrated into PBPK models for the optimization of drug therapy. Her PhD is from the University of Guelph in environmental toxicology where she examined the toxicokinetics of forestry-used herbicides on amphibians. A post-doctoral position followed in the Systems Biology group at Bayer Technology Services (BTS) in Leverkusen, Germany where physiologically-based pharmacokinetic modeling was the focus. A full-time position at BTS followed the post-doc for 2 years and then, coming back home to Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, she became an Assistant Professor in 2008 and an Associate Professor in 2014 at the University of Waterloo. Dr. Edginton spearheads the pharmacokinetic educational requirements for both the undergraduate and graduate programs.

This research lab is also the population pharmacokinetic modelling lead within the Web-Accessible Population Pharmacokinetics Service – Hemophilia (WAPPS-Hemo.org) program. This program, initiated out of McMaster University by Dr. Alfonso Iorio, provides hemophilia treaters with a platform that, when given patient covariates and factor concentrate plasma levels, uses previously developed brand-specific population PK model and Bayesian forecasting to generate estimates of patient PK that can be used to optimize dosing in the individual. We have over 550 clinical sites using the WAPPS-Hemo service from over 50 countries.
