Algebra, as it is studied in modern mathematics, is the systematic generalization of arithmetic needed to model or "coordinatize" objects of interest to mathematicians, using numbers (or their generalizations) and "natural" operations on them. As the objects being modelled can be quite varied, so are the various branches of modern algebra.
