3D Grid Façade Subtraction

To optimize façade geometries for enhanced daylighting and BIPV Energy Generation

Technology & Design

Description

This project introduces a new parametric workflow, as a model, to generate a façade system from a 3D grid pattern through a method of subtraction using Grasshopper algorithms. The generated forms were then investigated with Solar Radiation Analysis to develop a grid mapped on the facade to further integrate it with Photovoltaic panels and Vision Glass. The resulting façade systems were analyzed for daylighting to test the initial hypothesis that increasing façade surfaces can increase daylighting availability inside the building. Additional analyses were performed to evaluate the impact of increased surfaces on the production of renewable energy. Results were then compared to a building with a straight façade under similar conditions to assess the impact of façade optimization.
