Dr. Daniel Smilek

Professor

Dan's research focuses on understanding how attention and perception operate in everyday situations. This is addressed by using two distinct and complementary approaches. The first approach involves using standard laboratory tasks to uncover the cognitive and neural mechanisms that underlie attention and perception. The second approach involves observing and describing how attention and perception operate as individuals engage in purposeful activities in their natural environments.

Dan is internationally known for his groundbreaking studies of human attention.  Dan has published over 110 peer-reviewed research articles, many of which appear in top journals in the field (e.g., Nature, Psychological Science). Dan has co-authored several editions of a popular undergraduate textbook on Cognition, and he has been invited to present in his work in many countries, including the USA, UK, France and Sweden.  Professor Smilek’s research has been cited over 5500 times (Google Scholar) with some of his paper being cited over 400 times (Google Scholar).
