3. WCMS Responsive Redevelopment project (Jonathan Woodcock)

Jonathan has developed the Project Charter for the WCMS Responsive Redevelopment project. It will effectively lead to a "WCMS 2.0".

Jonathan's presentation is available online as is the WCMS Project Charter.

Scope:

  • Fully responsive using the COPE Strategy [Create Once Publish Everywhere]
  • Existing code will be refactored while aligning new code and refining tools, etc.
  • The scope does NOT include content restructuring existing content (up to site owner)
  • WCMS 2.0 will introduce additional API content types; news, stories, experts, events, publications, etc. that can be pulled into intended platform; website, application, portal, etc.

Strategy:

  • Three areas/buckets that will drive releases:
    • 1. Visible value to user
    • 2. Investment in infrastructure
    • 3. Investment in development capabilities
  • Aiming for a ‘3 week’ sprint cadence model

Next steps:

  • Stakeholder investment, kick-off/more to follow

4. Waterloo Magazine (Andrew McAlorum, Mark McKay)

  • Waterloo Magazine has gone digital!
  • Responsive, parallax [scrolling] design – a decoupled/headless Drupal template
  • API based, built on AngularJS (as is portal’s front end)
  • Some of these elements will be introduced to the WCMS for wider use (see next presentation)

5. WCMS publications site (Andrew McAlorum)

  • A turnkey service that will be based on design elements of Waterloo Magazine; elements that will be available still being determined
  • Standardized template for specific use cases; Magazines, reports, newsletters, etc.
  • Capabilities will include management of issues/volumes, archiving
  • Launching ~late July/August
  • Submit an RT for a ‘publications site’ if interested

Andrew's presentation is available online.

6. Student engagement -- IAWG update (Joe Kwan and Amy Meredith)

  • Working with SSO, the Student Consultation Group is meeting May 21
    • Will report back on findings/user engagement
  • Next meeting Joe will be updating on the browser support table

7. Waterloo CMS update -
Training and Support update
(Heather Wey), Technical updates (Kevin Paxman)

  • 484 WCMS sites, 48 in progress
  • Student Portal is a finalist for CUCCIO Innovation Award
  • WCMS 1.10.2 rolled out April 23, fixing minor issues not fixed by 1.10.1 (release notes: https://uwaterloo.ca/web-resources/news/wcms-1102-release)
  • Drupal 7.37 rolled out May 12
  • WCMS 1.11 coming soon, ironing out some release blocking issues
  • As mentioned previously, 1.11 bringing Facebook/Twitter metadata, updated editor, revision limits, Opportunities content type, etc.; something not previously mentioned is the ability to have anonymous blog commenting enabled on request
  • We’re working on updates and improvements to the IST Service Catalog which will become public soon; many of these changes will become available in a future update of the Service content type
  • On May 13, an issue with the file system caused sites to appear without CSS; actual cause was the site’s file folder had been accidentally deleted; folders were recovered from backup (~6 hours) and sites worked again; steps have been taken to prevent the error that caused this from happening again
  • Our weekly web development sessions (Fridays at 11am) now have a name – WebDevRev – and recaps are being posted to the Web Resources blog (https://uwaterloo.ca/web-resources/blog); anyone interested in attending can contact me or submit an RT to be added to the Outlook invitation
  • Aaron’s first SEW 127 Social Media Measurement course today, popular/waitlisted
  • Upcoming, Joe will be teaching a SEW Google Analytics 101
  • NOTE: SEW accessibility course fees now waived for part-time/student staff
  • IST Service Catalogue changes coming soon
  • IST Friday sessions now ‘Web Dev Rev’, will continue to recap sessions and everyone is invited
  • Kevin is working on a single paged responsive marketing theme, coming soon!
  • Soft launch of the responsive, accessible UW campus map (beta) is here
    • Shout out to many people & partners across campus! Thank you for all the hard work! It has been a great collaborative project involving folks from Creative Services, MSC, IST and Env.
    • Uses Leaflet API and OpenStreetMap to avoid proprietary issues and fully control the look & feel, etc.
    • Future phases will include more features (to be determined)
    • Printing capabilities on the beta map is an issue that will need to be resolved.
    • No specific rollout date/time; still collecting feedback & metrics
    • Please provide feedback
