Web Advisory Committee meeting (August 21, 2013)

August 21, 2013–  MC 2018 – 3:00 p.m.

1. Chair’s Remarks (Janice Cooke)

  • Virginia Young will be replacing Kirsty Budd as the representative from Student Success Office.

2. Approval of Minutes.

  • The minutes of July 2013 were approved with the following correction: "IT people who would prefer shorter versions of the WCMS courses can use the drop-in labs.  However, if they would like a credit on their record, they will need to attend the SEW course."

4. Stack Overflow clone for campus (Kris Olafson, Jim Johnston)

  • Cancelled.

5. Digital Initiatives (Jonathan Woodcock)

  • Information on visual identity is not ready yet.  Meetings have been scheduled and Jonathan will send an email with any new information as it is available.
  • DI is researching options for an Accessiblity review. Jonathan will report to the group at the September meeting.

6. Waterloo CMS Update (Pat Lafranier/Kevin Paxman)

  • Members are encouraged to participate in Dave Wallace's Blog.
  • Research Centers and Institutes should be considered high-priority to move to the WCMS to meet AODA requirements
  • Co-op student training for the Fall term. If you have hired a co-op student to work on your current or scheduled-for-migration site in the WCMS, we will be training our WCMS team co-op students on September 4 & 5 from 1:00-4:30 in MC 1078 (this is the SEW099, Content Maintainers course).  If you would like to include your co-op student in that training session contact Heather Wey  (hawey@uwaterloo.ca.)  There are 12 extra spots in the class available on first-come basis.
  • The WCMS Drop-in Lab will be closed from August 23-September 6. Regular hours resume on September 10, Tuesdays & Thursdays – 9:00-4:00 (MC 2060).  
  • Key Changes to the WCMS
    • Archived items are now removed 100%. If you have content that is associated with the archives, content has moved up a level.

    • Blog posts now have a date field.

    • Path auto settings have been updated. Before if over 100 characters, it would show as ~1, ~2, ~3.  The new length is now 255 characters.

    • Regarding redirects. In some cases, the new URL did not create properly and created loops. This should be fixed by the end of August 21st.

    • Sticky blog posts now.

    • Allow promoting blog pages to home pages;

    • IST co-ops are now automatically site admins on all sites - no longer necessary to add them;

    • there were a couple of outages in the past months due to the primary database failing; fail-over to the back up database in not automated but more scripts have been put in place to catch this more quickly;

  • Questions and Comments
    • Q. Are we not able to use underscores or dashes anymore?
    • A.  A lot of common punctuation is turned into dashes (minus sign dashes).  "True dashes" copied out of Word and other special characters are no longer allowed in automatically created URLs

7. Other Business

Q.  What was the result of the survey that Kris conducted on WCMS priorities?

A.  Web Steering will use the results to guide further changes and set priorities.

Q.  Where did responsive design fall in priorities?

A.  It was number 9 on the list and will be considered when the new design is developed.
