Demo of "Outline"  (Mirko Vucicevich)

  • Mirko from Science Computing has been working on a course online tool – called “Outline” – for the generation of and dissemination of course outlines.

  • This tool creates course outlines with much of the information being pulled directly from Quest (with data automatically updated). It has many features that can simplify course outline creation (such as importing in similar or previous outlines) and can provide other tools that would be of benefit to instructors (such as determining when are the best times for booking office hours.
  • For students, it creates online outlines in a more consistent and accessible format and provides them in an easy to access location. Integrating the outlines (or the data from them) into other online tools should be easy as it has an API
  • This tool is currently in use by the Physics Department, and being tested within other areas of the Science Faculty with hope of it being used faculty-wide in the near future.
  • If you are interested in trying Outline, or have any questions about please contact Mirko by email.

Elasticsearch (Joe Kwan)

  • Still using the interim solution, as we wait for our new search engine appliance – from elasticsearch – to come on line.
  • Updates to the temporary solution were recently made which should resolve some of the searching issues, and hopefully make this temporary solution more acceptable until the new system is in place. It was noted by attendees at WAC that there have been many search issues noted.
  • Anticipated that the new search engine should be online by July 2, 2019.
  • if anyone has any issues/concerns moving forward please contact Joe.

WCMS Training/Support update (Andrea Jennings)

Change to course offerings
WCMS SEW course offerings for May and June are listed on the Web Resources site. In-class courses will not be offered during July or August. If you need to complete a training course during those months, please contact wcms@uwaterloo.ca to schedule time in our WCMS Drop-in lab, or to set up alternate arrangements outside of the regular lab hours. Alternatively, self-registration for our online course offerings is available via LEARN.

If you'd like for us to confirm the training completed by users who are asking you for site access, just send us an email or an RT.

WCMS Drop-in lab
No scheduled closures.
WCMS Drop-in lab will be available on Thursday afternoons from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. If you require special arrangements outside of the regular drop-in hours please contact WCMS support.

WCMS technical update (Kevin Paxman)

  • Focus points in this sprint include Open Scholar, Important dates, our new local development environment, the upcoming catalogs content type, Drupal 8.
  • Open Scholar 1.6 was released the night of May 8; there was an issue with images and another with linked pages that have since been resolved. Release notes are on the Web Resources site.
  • 2.7.1 is nearly ready for WAC testing - progress was delayed due to issues with interim search implementation.
  • Tomorrow night (Thursday, May 16) WCMS developer Eric Bremner will be giving a technical presentation on his work with Important Dates to the Waterloo Region Drupal Users Group.
  • Several of the WCMS team members will be attending Drupal North in Montreal in mid-June.

Other Business

  • It was mentioned that there seems to be an increase in broken links with the most recent update.
  • Regarding the Campus Maps, it was asked to have the maps indoor function be removed as soon as possible as it contains some erronious information. As it is not currently editable, removing it is the logical option.

Meeting Adjournment
