Conference Kick-off and Keynote Speech

Bahareh Tehrani, Senior Network Engineer of Distribution Network Planning for Hydro One

Bahareh completed her Bachelor of Applied Science in Electrical Engineering at University of Toronto and obtained her Master of Engineering in Power Engineering at University of Waterloo.

She has been working at Hydro One since 2005, when she joined the company as part of the New Grad program. In her first 5 years at Hydro One, she went through multiple rotations to gain a broader experience at both Distribution and Transmission fields. She joined the Distribution Planning team in 2010 and has been with this team for the past 12 years. Currently she is the lead engineer for a team of 10, and is proud to lead her team with the ratio of 50% male to female engineers.

Panel Discussion: " Make Your Transition The Best For You"

How do I keep up with all my courses? How will I make friends? How do I make the most of this university experience? These are some questions you may ask yourself as you prepare to return to an in-person learning environment. Our goal to create a safe space to ask those questions and for us to give you a well-rounded perspective and a sneak peek into student life.

Workshops and Sessions (During registration, you will be asked to rank the following workshops and sessions based on preference) 

Space is limited in each workshop. We will make every effort to accomodate requests, however, we cannot guarantee you will receive your first choice of workshop.

Option 1: Think like an Employer (Resume/ Cover Letter Writing)

Through discussions and a hands-on activity, you will learn how to create effective and customized resume and cover letters. You will learn to use new methods to assess and articulate your transferable skills.

Option 2: Meal Planning Made Easy (Workshop on Nutrition)

Are you struggling to make time for meals? Does a busy schedule make cooking seem like a stressful and daunting task? You are not alone! This workshop will offer time saving tips and easy strategies for planning meals at work, school or home. Resources will be provided to help you implement a realistic meal routine, and debunk common misconceptions about meal prep. Stress less when it comes to mealtime: shop and plan like a dietitian!

Option 3: Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

Have you ever felt like you’re not as capable as people think you are? Or felt like a fraud about to be uncovered? You may be experiencing Imposter Syndrome. In this 60-minute workshop, we will work together to label the feelings of imposter syndrome and do an exercise that allows for everyone in the room to anonymously share the last time they felt like a fraud at work.

Option 4: Personal Branding and Unlocking LinkedIn Workshop

Not sure how to effectively communicate your passions, interests and skills to potential employees? Does your LinkedIn need a little sprucing up? Are you returning to in-person work in a while and need a closet update? Then this is the perfect workshop for you!

Get ready for your next interview and receive advice on how to stand out! Come prepared to learn how to answer common questions with this fun workshop. Learn how to make the perfect first impression with some tips and tricks!

Option 2: Two Part series: How to get your P.Eng License and Is Grad School for me?

This is a two-part presentation: First, You will be provided information on Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO); its structure and functionality, and how to obtain your Professional Engineers license and certificate from PEO. Second, information will be shared on various graduate programs and life as a graduate student by Michelle Liu (she/her) P.Eng, MASc, LEED-GA University of Waterloo Civil Engineering BASc ’18 & MASc ’20.

Makers Making Change is thrilled to be partnering with the Women in Engineering at the University of Waterloo to offer this workshop!

Join Makers Making Change to learn more about Assistive Technology and accessibility.

Are you curious if an assistive device can help you with a task? Or do you want to learn some technical skills that will help you contribute to your community? This program will explore how to build open source assistive technology devices that will help you, or the people you are helping, to gain better access to the world around us.
