Sodium, 11, Chem Ed 11, Michigan, U.S.A.
Sodium: Sodium, element 11, is well known for its yellow/gold flame test, shown on the left side of the tile. Across the bottom scrolls the distinctive sodium spectrum, and sodium's use in lights is represented by the light that forms the 0 in 2011.  Sodium chloride, table salt, with its simple cubic structure, has held an important place in history, at times valued more than gold. It was once mined in Michigan, home of ChemEd 2011. The planning committee for the conference designed the tile.  Special thanks to Matt Rose for his computer work.
