Health and wellness
Good health is an important part of a successful university career, and many resources are available on campus to help. In residence, all dons are first-aid certified and trained in emergency response. There are staff available in residence 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Health Services professionals run special programs right in residence, and there are always healthy food options available in the cafeterias.
Health Services
UW Health Services, located walking distance from all residences, is open Monday to Thursday 8:30 am to 7:30 pm and Fridays 8:30 am to 5 pm. Health Services acts as your family doctor while you’re away at school. There is also a doctor on-call after hours, 7 days a week.
Health Services provides comprehensive medical care for all registered students. The health professionals work to promote a safe and healthy environment for all students. For a list of medical services and more information about Health Services available on campus, visit their website.
Counsellor in residence
The University of Waterloo can be a challenging place sometimes. Difficult circumstances occur in everyone's life. Sharing these concerns with a friendly and experienced counsellor can be a big relief and can help you handle and manage the goals you have set in coming to university. Areas of expertise include: personal issues and trauma, relationship problems, stress, anxiety, depression, sexual harassment, eating disorders, and more. Counselling is offered on a short-term basis by trained professional counsellors.
In the fall and winter terms, you can talk to a qualified professional right in residence. Book an appointment through Counselling Services by calling 519-888-4567 ext. 32655.
Counselling Services also has professionals who help with educational decisions, career planning, and approaches to exams and study skills. Visit the Counselling Services website to learn more about the programs and expertise they offer.
Food Services
You are what you eat! The busy life of a student sometimes makes it more difficult to eat healthy, but Food Services at uWaterloo works very hard to offer students healthy and nutritious food choices across campus.
As a residence student, whether you have a required or optional meal plan, you can eat at any of the Food Services eateries on campus. You will enjoy a variety of meals that include vegetarian and vegan options, fresh fruits and vegetables, and cultural observances (i.e. halal, Ramadan, Chinese New Year).
Some great initiatives to watch for:
Campus recreation
Staying fit and involved at university is an important part of your overall health and wellness. In addition to varsity sports teams, there are many opportunities to be active through campus recreation.
Within residence, many areas put together teams to participate in the ongoing campus rec leagues (i.e. ball hockey, volleyball, basketball) or one-time tournaments (i.e. beach volleyball, squash, winter football, tennis).
There are also many fitness classes and instructional workshops going on each term. Campus Rec hires students every term so it’s also a great place to work on campus as a lifeguard, instructor, or program co-ordinator.
Fitness in residence
The Columbia Icefields (CIF) and Physical Activities Complex (PAC) athletic centres are both located within walking distance from all residences. There is also a smaller gym at Ron Eydt Village with cardio equipment and hand weights. The front desks at REV and V1 have a variety of sports equipment that can by signed out by any resident.
