University Choir - Fall 2024

University Choir at St. Matthews

The University Choir meets every Tuesday in the Conrad Grebel University College (CGUC) Chapel from 7:00 to 10:00 pm beginning the second week of classes. This large choir of approximately 70 singers performs a variety of works from the past and present. A brief vocal interview is required. Acceptance into the University Choir is by interview and at the discretion of the director, Liska Jetchick. The University Choir is open to students from all Faculties, staff, and Faculty members.  

1. Participant form

To participate in the University Choir you need to fill out the Participant Form every term. There is no LEARN for Ensembles, so this is a crucial step.  If you have any further questions please email the Ensemble Coordinator, Angelica Allen.

2. Audition 

New singers interested in participating in the choir are required to do a vocal hearing/audition, which will take place in the Chapel on September 10 (10:30am to 12:30 or in the evening) and again on September 12 between 6pm and 8:30pm. Please make sure to fill out the participant form and sign up for an auditionUniversity Choir Audition Link Fall Term

  • If you have not sung in the University Choir previously, please learn this piece.

  • If you sang in the University Choir during the Winter or Spring 2024 term, please contact Liska Jetchick  directly.  Do not forget to fill out the participant form. You will get a separate vocal hearing on either September 10 or 12.
  • Returning students, the director will send you the piece once you have contacted her.

3. Quest  

Register on Quest if you are taking the Ensemble for credit. Also note it is your responsibility to drop the course on Quest if you do not pass the audition or choose not to participate. An Ensemble credit is 0.25 units AND you can add this on a normal course load or ask your advisor for permission to override your course limit. Please note that students not taking Ensemble for credit will be charged a $30 fee, while non-students will pay a $60 fee.

4. Course requirements

  • In person rehearsal Tuesday nights from 7:00-9:30 most weeks. , September 17, 2024 will be the first rehearsal in Spring term. 
  • Read the information Sheet  (Fall term coming soon)
  • Participation in a choir retreat on October 5
  • Participation in an end of term concert on Saturday, November 30 at 7:30pm, location
    First United Church in Waterloo.
  • Other singing opportunities may also be arranged. 

New AwardThe Helen Martens Choral Music Award 
This award is open to students enrolled in one of the Music department choirs (e.g. Chamber, University or Chapel choirs)
