School keeps Ben Austin busy – there’s a lot to learn as a Pharmacy student at the University of Waterloo. He entered the Pharmacy program after completing a degree in Health Studies, and finds that his undergraduate program enabled him to bring a unique perspective to how he approaches his role as a pharmacist.
Ben chose Health Studies because of its solid grounding in general science, statistics, and health promotion. Since graduation, he has found that learning these concepts was not only fascinating – they shaped the approach he plans to take in his career as a pharmacist.
As Ben explains, “pharmacy is traditionally reactive in nature – medications are used to treat those who are sick. The Health Studies program provided me with a view of the preventative side of health.” This insight has influenced his perspective on how medications can be used to maintain health in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle.
Ben is just one example of how Health Studies graduates bring a unique perspective to how we approach health and health care – a perspective that creates better health outcomes for individuals and communities.
