Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor)

Program:

Inclusive Diversification and Economic Advancement in the North (IDEANorth)

Type:

Call for Proposals (CFP)

Internal deadlines:

2 weeks in advance of submitting your application

Program deadline:

Ongoing Program

Research focus areas:

Inclusive Diversification and Economic Advancement in the North (IDEANorth) makes foundational investments in economic infrastructure, sector development and capacity building to help position Northerners in the territories to take advantage of Canada's innovation economy.

IDEANorth helps enable Northerners to take advantage of northern economic opportunities to grow a strong, diverse, and sustainable economy in Canada's North. IDEANorth supports community economic growth through investments in small-scale infrastructure to allow communities and businesses to extend services and by supporting the early stages of large-scale infrastructure projects.

Program overview:
IDEANorth:

  • Is administered by the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), and promotes economic development in the North in order to strengthen territorial economies and increase economic participation by Northerners;
  • Replaces the Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program to better align, advance, encourage and support broader economic opportunities as well as the specific economic and business needs of each territory;
  • Accepts project proposals through a combination of targeted calls for expressions of interest (EOIs) and a continuous intake process throughout the year;
  • Allows for the use of both non-repayable and repayable Contribution Agreements, thereby expanding the funding mechanisms available to support the diverse needs of proponents.

Expected results
Expected results of the IDEANorth program include:

  • Strong, stable territorial economy for the benefit of Northerners and all Canadians
  • Increased economic development and diversification
  • Partnerships established with Northern governments and organizations
  • Increased capacity of Northerners to respond to economic development opportunities
  • Expanded multi-user infrastructure that support economic development

Program streams
The IDEANorth program will be implemented through four program streams:

  • Stream 1: Sector & Capacity Development - Foundational investments to advance territorial economic growth and sector development
  • Stream 2: Business Scale-Up and Productivity - Targeted investments to SMEs, start-ups and entrepreneurs to expand their businesses, accelerate business growth, and enhance productivity and competitiveness.
  • Stream 3: Small Scale Economic Infrastructure - Small-scale economic infrastructure development through construction of new or improvement of existing multi-user community infrastructure.
  • Stream 4: Economic Infrastructure Studies (large scale) - Advancing foundational economic infrastructure investments by supporting pre-construction readiness.
For further information please refer to the Program Website and the IDEANorth program guidelines.

Funding:

Up to $6 million (The maximum CanNor contribution to eligible project costs will be 80).

Program deadline: There is no deadline to apply, but funding is limited
Research focus:

The Going Global Innovation (GGI) program offers funding to support Canadian entities’ efforts to establish new research and development (R&D) collaboration opportunities with foreign entities to commercialize their technology. GGI may provide funding up until the point at which the R&D collaboration is formalized. R&D collaboration is considered formalized following the signing of a contractual agreement, or once the Canadian and foreign entities begin engaging in the R&D activities. All activities subsequent to the formalization of the R&D collaboration, including the R&D itself and project implementation, are ineligible for GGI funding.

The purpose of the R&D collaboration with the foreign entity must be to conduct R&D to advance the commercialization of a technology, with the anticipation to launch the technology in the target market in less than 3 years.

Projects that are not related to research and development (R&D) including but not limited to projects focused on sales, manufacturing, distribution, and marketing are ineligible for GGI funding.

GGI applications must be submitted at least 8 weeks in advance of the first travel date in order to guarantee that sufficient time is available to process the application. Only activities taking place at least 8 weeks in advance of the application’s submission will be reviewed. Shorter notice activities will be withdrawn from consideration immediately. The remainder of the application, independent of the withdrawn activities, must meet standard GGI criteria.

It is important to note that not all activities will be supported in all markets. Canada has sanctions and related measures in place against a number of countries, as well as sanctions against specific individuals and entities.  GGI may also decline funding for reasons of national interest. For more information, please visit the program website

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan)

Program:

The Sky's the Limit Challenge

Type:

Call for Proposals

Internal deadline:

One week in advance of the program

Program deadline:

Stream 1: February 2019

Stream 2: Competition opens March 2019 and closes January 2021

Research Focus:

Stream 1: Green Aviation Fuels Innovation Competition

Accelerating the affordability and availability of sustainable aviation fuel is an important part of Canada and the world’s transition to a low-carbon economy. The aviation industry is growing, with air traffic growing by 5% per year. While other modes of transportation can turn to alternative energy sources (e.g., electric vehicles), aircraft will continue to need liquid fuels for the near future. Existing technologies and aircraft efficiency improvements will not be enough for the aviation industry to achieve its ambitious goals of: carbon neutral growth by 2020 and to cut its total CO2 emissions to half of 2005 levels by 2050. Achieving greater greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions in the aviation sector requires the widespread availability and use of sustainable aviation fuel (sustainable aviation fuel), which is currently more expensive than conventional jet fuel.

Stream 1 is an open call for proposals where up to four finalists will receive up to $2 million each over 18 months to support their efforts to develop the best way to scale up sustainable aviation fuel in Canada, leveraging the experience gained from the first production. Applicants are encouraged to develop a consortium across the supply chain to support their efforts.

At the end, a $5-million prize will be awarded to the finalist with the most economically and environmentally sustainable approach for commercial-scale sustainable aviation fuel production in Canada.

The objectives of The Sky’s the Limit Challenge (the Challenge) are:

  1. Accelerate innovation to bring down the cost of sustainable aviation fuel and reduce GHG emissions from air transportation.
  2. Build on Canadian strengths (e.g., forestry, agriculture, fuel production, innovation) to develop a world-class supply chain for the production of sustainable aviation fuel.
  3. Support Canadian leadership in clean technology innovation and the growing global market for green fuels.
  4. Promote the use of Canadian-made sustainable aviation fuel in domestic commercial flights in Canada.

Stream 2: Cross-Canada Flight Competition

Stream 2 competition will open in March 2019. The Canada Flight Prize will be awarded to the first Canadian sustainable aviation fuel producer to supply 2500 litres of Canadian made sustainable aviation fuel that meets all applicable aviation turbine fuel standards (i.e. meets Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) and American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) standards) to Air Canada and West Jet for use in a cross-Canada flight at a minimum blend of 10%. This prize can be awarded at any time between June 2019 and March 31, 2021. It will be awarded only once to the first Canadian producer who meets the criteria.

Specific dates will be communicated through the Challenge website at http://impact.canada.ca.

For additional information, please refer to their website

Funding:

Stream 1: Up to four finalists will receive up to $2 million each over 18 months. Of the selected finalists, one grand prize of $5-million will be awarded.

Stream 2: One prize of $1,000,000
