Extension of Distance Learning Policy for Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Eligibility

Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has extended the distance learning provision for eligibility to August 31, 2023. This allows international students studying online from abroad or who have submitted a study permit application before August 31, 2022, to continue up to 100% of their program online up until August 31, 2023 without affecting their PGWP eligibility. To be eligible, you must either hold a valid study permit or have applied for a study permit before starting your studies.

If you apply for your first study permit after August 31, 2022, time spent studying outside of Canada before August 31, 2023 won’t be deducted from the length of your PGWP.  However, you would still be required to complete at least 50% of your program while physically in Canada.

You must have applied for your study permit before you began a term from outside Canada if you wish to use it towards PGWP eligibility.
